How to obtain a
B.C. Driver's License
How to get started:
1. You should obtain a copy of the "Road Sense for Drivers" at
a driver services centre.
2. Study the Guide thoroughly to prepare for your knowledge
test. The test is notorious for being very difficult and has a low pass
rate!
3. If you're 16 years or older, you can take the knowledge
test at any driver services centre. No appointment is necessary. If you
are under 19 years old, a parent or legal guardian must accompany you
and sign for your Learner's License, the Class 7L license. Be sure to
bring one piece of primary identification (Birth Certificate, Canadian
Citizenship Card or Passport - and one piece of secondary id.)
A Class 7L License is valid for two years.
4. You are only going to learn to drive once in your life, so
you might as well learn it correctly. You do not need a Learner's
License to start a course, however we strongly recommend you get it
right away so we can arrange for your driving lessons.
Now you are ready for your lessons and can practice on the
road, as long as you have a co-driver beside you and a red "L" sign on
a visible section of the rear of your vehicle.
Graduated Licensing
Graduated Licensing began in B.C. on August 1, 1998. Right
from the start, Nicholas Goldminc was approved by ICBC. Very few other
schools or programs come close to his experience and instructor
qualifications.
Graduated licensing means any new driver must gain 12 months
experience before qualifying for their road test, and then 24 months of
driving experience before qualifying for their full class 5 license.
But if they successfully complete the GLP approved Dynamic Driving
School course that 24-month period may be reduced to 18 months. That
means you can be a better driver and get your class 5 license six
months earlier!
Our students usually take their road test in our our trademark
Black Mini Cooper, the same one they learned in. Unlike other driving
schools, the Road Test Package is included our courses. The Class 7
road test will take about 45 minutes and may include intersection
maneuvers, parking, changing lanes, and entering and exiting a highway.
It also tests your hazard perception.
Once
the road test is passed, new drivers move into the Novice stage of
graduated licensing. Your new Class 7 License is valid for 2 years. You
still need to display a sign on your vehicle whenever you drive, but
now it's the green "N" sign. Check with us, or ICBC, about the other
restrictions that apply during this period.

Class 5 License
Anytime after gaining 24 months of demerit-free driving
experience, you can take the Class 5 road test (GLP Course graduates
may qualify for a six month acceleration - see above!). It's a more
advanced
test to see how your driving skills have developed over the past two
years. When you pass that test, you'll earn a full-privilege Class 5
driver's license! We also offer driver improvement programs for
licensed drivers.
